Why are Korean Shows so Addictive?

Oppa, saranghaeyo hangug-in!

Koreans are big on visuals, that means their dramas are always full of beautiful people. After you’ve watched a few you start having your favorite actors/actresses, then you watch anything they’re in. As someone pointed out, the actors are very accomplished. Even the idol actors are held to a very high level of performance. I find that the base level of acting skill demanded in Korean Dramas far outstrips the majority of American shows. The production values and the cinematography is first rate. Some of these series rival movies in this way.

If you think I am kidding, watch Goblin, Descendants of the Sun or Legend of the Blue Sea and one of my favorite A World of Married Couples. There are different genres, obviously, but even the dark and heavy ones tend to have quite a few comedic scenes. Koreans like their dramas to have both crying and laughter in them, and the combination works well.

I don’t know about other people but I just love all the depictions of food. I’ve fallen in love with Korean food just from watching people really enjoying what they’re eating in all these dramas. I doubt I’ll ever go for blood sausage soup or pork intestines, but I would go for a jjajangmeyon any time. Mmmmm… jjajangmeyon. The language of all Asian languages, I find Korean to be the most melodic and the most pleasant to the ear. I’ve watched c-dramas as well, and it’s hard to get used to hearing Mandarin after you’ve enjoyed the sound of Korean for a while. Kdrama stories are never boring, they are a huge catch. It gives us multiple genres. Their plotline varies from fantasy to science to romance to technology without leaving any aspect behind. It also covers every aspect of the storyline and makes viewers connected till the end. Their episodes also keep viewers engaged in every single episode and keep the mystery till the end, to make them suffer. They are perfectly constructed in a way that makes sense and makes people connected willingly. Kdrama tends to have a predictable plot revolving around a love triangle or sometimes like a circle. Main leads usually have childhood connections in the drama and the same rich guy, poor girl romance and his parents are against their relationship but they seem to look very eye-catching. There is indeed a good plotline without making us bored

UPDATED: With the phenomenal success of Crash Landing on You, we revisit all the elements we love about K-Dramas.

There goes this catchphrase, "Kinain na ng sistema," which can be loosely translated as being eaten up or swallowed by the system. If before this phrase was typically used in politics, today, it has taken on a whole new meaning; people have been using it to refer to Filipinos' fascination and passion for Koreanovelas or K-Dramas. It's been so widely used that it has launched countless memes indicating people's different levels of addiction.

Even for the uninitiated, this whole K-Drama craze is fascinating enough to pique one's curiosity. But why exactly do K-Dramas remain to be most watched and well appreciated? In spite of the obvious language barrier, why are people addicted to it? We’ve summed up all the reasons here:

Koreans are known for being beauty junkies (those of you who have been to Myeong-dong may have a better understanding of this). And these poreless, chiseled-to-perfection human beings are simply too hard to resist. Seeing two beautiful actors share sweet moments and eventually fall in love makes the watching experience more enjoyable. Usually, this factor is what initially draws people into a K-Drama, and ultimately, one of the reasons that make them stay for more.

Korean dramas are very simple to understand. Limited number of episodes so you would know that there is end to the story, which makes it more interesting and you don't get bored. Even the sci-fi storylines or their history based storylines are so appealing that it makes it very hard to remember that you are not Korean. Strangely, Koreans find it very surprising that people from other countries like their dramas. I wasn’t into Kdramas so much before. Being a half Korean American it kind of was a bit cringe to me at first about how people were so obsessed with our culture. Being in Penn I didn’t have a lot of Asian friends so I stuck with my family a lot. I got to watch Korean dramas and found out the depth of the stories. They are very well written and also their humor kills me everytime.

There have been a lot of times that I may have cried over a series too much but actually they really get to you in a deep way. If you haven’t watched any yet, it’s about time that you do. You are missing out!

It varies depending on people. Some people have insomnia because of it while some are just very casual. But it's very easy to get addicted to them.99% of them get addicted. A normal experience of a Kdrama addicted person, You think of experimenting the world of Kdramas so you ask people. They tell you about some of the most famous Kdramas. Korean Dramas bring one’s fantasy to screen. Actually, after watching a Kdrama you get to know your own fantasies. This is the truth behind the addiction.

Not only this, but the emotions, screenplays, script, actors, their acting, their aegyo moments are some that lead you to get addicted to the Kworld. For me personally it’s the feeling of total immersion in this absolutely wonderful world with great stories, beautiful acting and fantastic music that makes me addicted to Korean cinema. Korean Dramas know how to present love. Not lust, not sex, but love. You may have to go through six or eight episodes for a single kiss or a back hug, but the wait is worth it. Lastly, beautiful locations, beautiful actors and actresses and their impeccable dressing sense make K Dramas a treat for eyes.
