For most of us, the Netflix and chill life is THE life. Who wouldn’t want to snuggle up in bed and just have a bowl of chips in one hand and the TV remote on the other, and stay there for hours on end? Pretty baller, right? We can only dream of spending in days like that, as we go on about our real life, spending a few idle hours of our day binge-watching on our film-favorites, and must-see series as well.
Many of us have resorted to escaping life by watching movies or series, entertain or distract us from our everyday hustles, that’s why a lot of people have already have gone on board the Netflix train and are ever-so-updated with their releases, time and time again. I just don’t see how you can not NOT get hooked, because there’s always something for everyone all the time: Western movies, series or reality shows, Korean films and series, there are also stand-up comedy specials, documentaries for the little investigator in all of us, or cooking shows and all sorts of what-nots.
So if you’re like me who likes staying on top of my Netflix game, I’m sure you’d love to always be updated on what’s hot. It’s a good feeling to know what everyone else is talking about, or what everyone else is watching. Here we take a look at Netflix releases in March 2022, and try to see which ones are well within our wheelhouse. Let’s hope we’d be everyone’s Netflix guru at the end of this article.
1. Wild Child
The 411: If you’ve ever been to high school, you’ll totally, and I mean totally, relate to this film. Released in 2008 in theaters, this Netflix March release is about the life of Poppy Moore, a wealthy and spoiled teenager who is so accustomed to getting her way all the time. She spends her time in England in a strict boarding school as a punishment from her mogul dad. This story is the evolution of a girl, from living a privileged life and not thinking of how her actions affect other people around her, to a young woman who is slowly learning to be sensitive of others’ feelings, and appreciating how the more important things in life are those which cannot be bought – like friendship and companionship.
Watch this: If you’re in the mood to look back and reminisce on how (relatively) simple life is when you were younger, then this film might be for you. It will surely take you back to a time when you are starting to learn to find your way in society. And really, it’s okay if you’re still searching for your place in the world, whatever age you may be. Who are we to judge?
2. The Weekend Away
The 411: Blair Waldorf fans, this is for you. Leighton Meester stars in a psychological movie which starts as a simple weekend vacation with her college best friend, and ends up being the most horrible couple of days of her life. I’ve grown up to Leighton Meester’s Gossip Girl alter ego, that’s why it was a treat for me to see her not as glammed up as I remember her to be, but it was such a revelation to see how she has grown and matured from the teenage-preppy school girl, to a young mother in this film. The depth of Beth (Leighton’s character) is stamped all throughout the film.
As busy as we can get, this movie is surprisingly relatable and on-point in terms of depicting our day-to-day struggles. Going on a vacation to a foreign land with just you and your friend can sound like a magical time, but this movie shows all the things that could go wrong in a vacation like this, especially when you’ve just given birth to a beautiful baby and are not used to being away from your husband for quite some time.
Watch this: If you’re in the mood for some Nancy Drew-level investigation skills, this Netflix March release is definitely for you. I personally had to watch it a second time for all the little details to make sense. Its fast pace won’t leave you bored, and don’t need a flashback of the characters’ backstories for you to be able to tie the pieces together. It gets good, though, because just when you think it’s done, it’s still not. You can also watch this if you’re looking to go on vacation. Surely the view and the scenery will leave you wanting to book the first flight out of the country. It might even make you want to go look for a house and lot for sale and settle there for good.
3. Worst Roommate Ever
The 411: Get ready for a creep-fest with this limited series from Netflix, as they round up a bunch of creepy, crazy co-habiting situations based on real-life accounts of real people. It’s a special limited series from Netflix so make sure to watch with caution. If you’re a scaredy cat like me, watch it in broad daylight, but it will for sure still blow your mind with the twists and unexpected turns of the series. It’s very relatable because it’s an everyday person’s everyday struggles, like looking for an affordable house and lot to live in. It clearly shows you shouldn’t trust people you just meet, but of Netflix’s March releases, this is one to send chills up your spine.
Watch this: If you can’t sleep in the middle of the night, this one’s definitely NOT for you. This is mostly not for the faint of heart, but if you’re looking for something to make your heart beat faster, you should give this a go. Make sure to watch carefully and closely, so you don’t miss any of the details that tie the stories together. Get ready for multiple OMG! moments in this series, as this will surely make you hear every little sound in your surroundings after you finish watching.
4. Is it Cake?
The 411: This series had me at CAKE. If you’re like me, anything food or cooking, surely I’m in. A panel of judges places their bets on beautiful items and creations displayed in front of them and they guess which of these is made out of cake. On the other side, a competing group of professional bakers give their best shots at creating masterpieces and showing their baking and designing prowess. They will aim to make an optical illusion out of their creations by making cakes in the form of bags, shoes, and a variety of other things. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next cake creation is the size of a house and lot!
The bakers battle it out in their cake-identification skills before getting to choose who to bake against; then make their own creations before putting it out to a group of judges. Their goal is to ‘fool’ the judges so they don’t guess which one of the five options is cake. Whoever wins this round will go through another bonus round and identify again which of a few options is cake, to win an extra prize. For us viewers, though, it will be for satisfaction in knowing we can also learn how to do what they do and probably, given the time and equipment, actually try and do it ourselves.
Watch this: If you’re looking for a sign to go take that baking class, this is it! I’m only a few episodes in and I’m already googling nearby or online baking classes within my area. I’ve always wanted to learn how to bake and with this show, I’m somehow encouraged that maybe I can do this too. It’s a fun feeling to know that with every little detail and technique they do, they can come up with something as magical as their finished products, and I also want to be able to do that, too. Needless to say, but I’ll say it anyway, of Netflix’s March releases, this has got to be my favorite.
5. Bad Vegan: Fame, Fraud, Fugitives
The 411: Netflix’s March releases have been a step ballsy-er as they are now taking on real stories from real people. Sarma Melngailis is a degree-holder from UPenn who has strayed away from the usual Economics Major’s career path. She has opened up an avant-garde raw-vegan restaurant right smack in the middle of New York City, no less, originally with her then-boyfriend and an investor to back them up. When things got tough she and her boyfriend broke up, both her and her then-boyfriend asked their investor to throw the other out because they clearly can’t work together (oh the story of exes), but their investor decided to keep her. The investor then sold her the restaurant which led to her amassing so much debt, but then she owned the restaurant. It may have been a bad decision, looking back, but with the restaurant, she was able to build a brand, which was able to thrive and be successful, and from there she considered being successful herself.
As the business picked up, she thought her problems would be solved professionally, as she was also working towards healing herself on a personal level. In this state of aloneness and depression, she meets Anthony, who she calls Mr. Shane Fox. If you look at it, it’s a simple story of money extortion and while she was being generous, Anthony was being controlling and was isolating her from her friends and family, which may have led to him controlling her even in a psychological aspect. She then gets confused about the real reality, as Anthony keeps hinting about being ‘other-worldly’, talking about a ‘non-physical’ family, and tells her that she has to pass the tests he gives her—including wiring him money whenever he asks, without her being able to know why—to be able to prove herself worthy of all the wealth and power they will get in the ‘happily ever after’. They got married, mostly so she can be assured that she will get her money back from him.
Watch this: Well, I don’t even know why I watched this to begin with, but it was a good eye-opener to knowing and understanding toxic relationships from both sides. We all know that abusers come in many shapes and forms, but we know very little about the victims who fall prey to them. It’s mind-boggling that someone like Sarma, who is well-educated, well-established (she has her own house and lot) has a wide variety of friends, who seemingly has a sound head over her shoulders, would fall for Anthony’s schemes. It may be that once she was in, she got in way too deep, that’s why she couldn’t back out of it anymore. Oh and how could someone like Sarma believe that there was a way to keep her favorite dog, Leon, immortal? Come on, I know.
Since almost everyone is on board the Netflix train, from K-drama to originals, the world seems to feel smaller and smaller. We’re now able to see the world through new spectacles, and also see more of the world with the help of technology. And as we continue to hope that this pandemic continues to pass so we can move forward with living our lives in a ‘better’ normal, we thank Netflix for being there for us during the time when all we can do is stay at home and travel through these movies and series.
We’ve been to Korea and seen all these Korean dramas brought to life, and somehow relate to them. We’ve been to South America and learned about accounts that discuss the undisclosed lives involved in drug cartels. We’ve seen the lives of the Kardashians as they trotted around the world. We’ve been to Marrakesh as Anna Delvey celebrated there as she got approval for her foundation. We’ve been to all these places and met all these people, and it was for sure a way that we got to survive this pandemic. So from here on out, Netflix will always have a place in hearts, quarantine or nor quarantine.
